South Africa has always felt like an unattainable dream to me – exotic landscapes, endless ocean beaches, and the wind that never stops. At the end of October 2024, that dream finally came true: I arrived in Cape Town. I wasn’t just here as a tourist – from November 1st, I joined a kite school team, where I handle administrative tasks and also work as a teacher. I signed up for five months. 🙂 From the very first moment, I knew this trip would be more than just work or gaining new experiences – it was the start of a whole new chapter in my life.

Cape Town and visa requirements for Hungarian tourists
Cape Town is one of South Africa’s most beautiful and well-known cities, a unique meeting point of nature and culture. The iconic Table Mountain, stunning beaches, and vibrant city life make it an attractive destination for travelers. The city also offers many historical and natural attractions, such as Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, and Boulders Beach, home to African penguins.
Hungarian citizens generally do not need a visa in advance to travel to Cape Town, one of South Africa’s most popular cities, as long as the stay does not exceed 90 days. Upon entry, passports must be valid for at least 30 days and have at least two blank pages for stamps.
However, if you plan to stay longer or require a different type of visa, Hungarian citizens must apply at the South African embassy, which involves completing various administrative procedures. It’s a good idea to check the requirements in advance and start the process early to ensure a smooth and stress-free stay.
Before you travel to Cape Town: Safety tips and important information
I think what interests me most is whether Cape Town is safe.

Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in South Africa, but unfortunately, there are some security challenges. For example, my phone was stolen during my first week – I was careless, but I’ve also heard of similar cases from friends: some were stopped at a red light when their car window was broken and their bag was taken from the seat. However, if you follow some basic precautions, the security situation in Cape Town is no worse than in a large Asian city..
Important safety tips:
Avoid lonely, deserted places, especially at night.
Do not carry large amounts of valuables with you and take care of your personal belongings.
Use a reliable taxi (Uber) or ride-hailing service, ALWAYS!
Find out in advance about safe and less dangerous neighborhoods. (Avoid Townships)
Stop at red lights at night, in a deserted area.
Never hike alone. Always be in a group of 3 or 4.
Buy a SIM card there in case you need a taxi or assistance.
Buying a SIM card in Cape Town – quick and easy
You can easily buy a SIM card in Cape Town, even at the airport, where Vodacom and MTN stores are available. If you don’t get one there, there are plenty of options in the city center and large shopping malls. The most popular providers are Vodacom and MTN, both offering good coverage and fast internet.
I definitely recommend Vodacom. :)
Cape Town weather - be prepared for changeable weather! EVEN in summer.
Cape Town’s weather is very changeable: sometimes it’s warm and sunny, other times cold and windy. There are many windy days, so it’s always a good idea to dress in layers and be prepared for sudden weather changes. Sunscreen and a light or warmer jacket are always recommended!
What prices should you expect in Cape Town?
I wouldn’t call Cape Town cheap – food and other expenses can add up pretty quickly, and you might end up spending around 1,000 euros a month if you’re not careful. That said, there are definitely ways to save! Hostels usually start at about 20 euros per night, and Airbnbs are around 30 euros and up.
Accommodation
I stayed at a hostel in Bloubergstrand - https://www.khayahostel.co.za - If you're looking for a good community, a friendly atmosphere and sporty company, I definitely recommend this hostel! 🌊🏄♂️🧑🤝🧑

Blouberg is one of Cape Town’s most popular beach spots, especially for kitesurfers, surfers, and digital nomads. The white sandy beach and stunning panoramic views of Table Mountain make it a truly unforgettable place.
City Bowl, Gardens and Tamboerskloof
City Bowl, Gardens, and Tamboerskloof are perfect for city explorers and culture lovers. You’ll find cozy cafés, art galleries, and quick access to the Table Mountain cable car. Prices are moderate, especially for shorter stays, and it’s easy to get around on foot or by public transport.
Camps Bay
Camps Bay is perfect for sunset lovers and couples looking for a touch of luxury. The area is full of elegant villas, chic apartments, and high-end hotels. Prices can be on the higher side, but watching the sun set over the ocean while having dinner is definitely worth it! Just keep in mind that it’s not very central, so you’ll need a bit of travel to get to the city.

Green Point and Sea Point -I loved this area too, though the accommodations can be a bit pricey.
Green Point and Sea Point are perfect if you want the best of both worlds – city life and the seaside. You’ll find everything here: shops, the beach, a beautiful promenade, and even the stadium. Prices are mid to high range, but the modern, well-equipped apartments make for a very comfortable stay.
Table View
Table View and Parklands are perfect for kitesurfers, athletes, and students looking for a long-term stay. The area is known for its affordable rooms and apartments, making it a great budget-friendly choice. It’s a bit farther from the city center, but if you love an active lifestyle, that’s no problem at all!
