Egypt – Conquering the Last Continent

When I first set out to travel, I never imagined that one day I would reach every continent in the world. My final destination turned out to be Egypt – and with that, a long-time dream came true: I set foot on all six accessible continents (since Antarctica is a different story).

Egypt was a very special choice for this milestone. It is not only the cradle of ancient civilization but also a place where history, culture, and everyday life exist in a fascinating harmony. From the very first moment, I knew this journey would be unlike any other.

Egypt was a very special choice for this milestone. It is not only the cradle of ancient civilization but also a place where history, culture, and everyday life exist in a fascinating harmony. From the very first moment, I knew this journey would be unlike any other.

Standing before the pyramids was almost incomprehensible – how could human hands, thousands of years ago, create such monumental structures? Cruising along the Nile, I finally understood why this river is called the lifeblood of Egypt – everything truly revolves around it.

But for me, Egypt was not only about history. The vibrant chaos of Cairo’s bazaars, the unique flavors of local dishes, and the endless silence of the desert all contributed to an experience that I will never forget.

In Egypt, a chapter of my travels came to a close: I visited the last continent missing from my journey. This milestone taught me that dreams really can come true if we are determined enough – and that the world will always have something new waiting to be discovered.

Entry Requirements for Egypt

Visa and entry – what Hungarian travelers should know

Hungarian citizens need a visa to enter Egypt, but there are several options available:

  • Electronic Visa (e-Visa): Can be applied for online, valid for 30 days. Available for single or multiple entries. Processing takes 3–7 days, payment by bank card. All you need is a photo, passport, and email address.

  • Visa on Arrival: Available at the airport for about 25 USD. Cash payment required, and expect longer queues.

  • Sinai resorts: In Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba, or Taba you can stay visa-free for up to 15 days, provided you don’t leave the Sinai Peninsula.

Important: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months, and it’s advisable to have proof of return ticket, accommodation, and sufficient funds to ensure smooth entry.

Before Traveling to Egypt: Essential Safety Tips

Egypt offers a magical experience for every traveler: the pyramids, the Sphinx, the shimmering waters of the Nile, and the bustling bazaars all create memories that will last a lifetime. At the same time, as with any exotic destination, it is important to keep a few basic safety tips in mind to ensure that your journey remains carefree and enjoyable.

1. Safe areas and walking alone

Avoid walking alone at night or in deserted areas. It’s best to stick to busy streets frequently visited by tourists. Moving around in a group is much safer, especially in unfamiliar neighborhoods.

2. Protect your personal belongings

Do not carry large amounts of cash or expensive items such as jewelry or cameras. Keep your bag and phone with you at all times, and pay attention to your wallet. This is especially important in crowded bazaars and on public transportation.

3. Reliable transportation

When taking a taxi or transfer, always choose an official or well-known service (for example, Uber or Careem). Never get into a car with an unknown driver.

4. Know your neighborhoods in advance

Research which areas are safe and which are best to avoid. In Cairo and other large cities, some districts less frequented by tourists, such as certain townships, can be dangerous.

5. Watch the traffic

Traffic in Egypt can be hectic, especially in big cities. Always stop at red lights and stay aware of your surroundings.

6. Local SIM card

It’s a good idea to get a local SIM card so you can quickly call a taxi, ask for help, or check directions online.

7. Passport and documents

Always carry a valid passport and visa. It’s helpful to have a backup copy in case of emergencies – especially when traveling between cities, as there are multiple checkpoints where your passport may be requested.

8. Sun protection and hydration

The Egyptian sun is very strong, so use sunscreen, wear a hat and sunglasses, and always drink bottled water to avoid dehydration.

Accommodation in Egypt: Where to Stay and What to Expect

Choosing the right accommodation is a key part of any trip to Egypt, as comfort, price, and location can all shape your experience. Travelers have plenty of options, from luxury hotels to budget-friendly hostels, whether you’re visiting Cairo, Luxor, or seaside resorts like Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh.

Why Egypt?

Egypt is at once ancient and alive, mystical and everyday. The shadow of the pyramids carries the weight of history, while the bustling bazaars reveal the vibrancy of the present. The waters of the Nile, nourishing the land for millennia, continue to connect people, cultures, and stories.

Egypt is a place where past and present walk hand in hand – where the golden light of sunset evokes both the era of the pharaohs and the daily lives of today’s people. It is a country that is not just a destination, but an experience: a kaleidoscope of scents, flavors, sounds, and emotions.

It feels like a journey through time, and by the end, you realize that Egypt is not just a place to visit—it is an experience that will stay with you forever.
