The Engadin Valley, nestled in the eastern Swiss Alps, is a hidden gem that truly shines in summer. With its dramatic peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and charming villages, Engadin is the perfect destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and anyone looking to recharge in the pure beauty of the Alps.
Every time I gaze at the towering mountains surrounding the valley, I’m left completely breathless – the scenery is simply breathtaking.
Since that first visit, I’ve returned every year to spend a season here, and it never fails to amaze me.

Engadin is a hiker’s paradise – here are a few easy trail tips, paths accessible to everyone. In the next blog post, I’ll share my favorite routes in more detail.

St. Moritz Lake Circuit
A 4.3 km easy walk around Lake St. Moritz, perfect for a relaxing stroll while enjoying the serene lake views and surrounding mountains.
Lej da Staz Trail
A peaceful 11.3 km hike from St. Moritz to the picturesque Lej da Staz, meandering through forests and meadows. Perfect for nature lovers looking for tranquility and a serene alpine escape.
Fourcla Surlej – Val Roseg Trail
A picturesque hike descending into the Val Roseg valley, featuring alpine meadows and stunning panoramic views of the Bernina massif. A true reward for passionate hikers. In winter, you can even feed the birds! 🙂

Morteratsch Glacier Trail
One of the most spectacular views of the glacier. This easy, family-friendly hike takes you up close to the impressive Morteratsch Glacier. The wide, well-maintained path winds through alpine forests and open meadows, accompanied by informative signs along the way. Perfect for all ages – accessible yet offering a truly special experience in the heart of the Swiss Alps.
Engadin Lakes
If you feel more drawn to lakes, one of the most magical aspects of Engadin in summer is being close to the water and enjoying its calm. The lakes not only offer picturesque views but also opportunities for swimming, SUP, canoeing, or simply recharging in nature. Each lake has its own character: Lake St. Moritz combines urban charm with the mirrored mountain waters, Lake Silvaplana is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, while Lej da Segl and Lake Sils offer a quieter, more secluded experience. Here are a few tips:
1. Lake St. Moritz
Located right next to the town of St. Moritz, perfect for an easy stroll or a lakeside picnic. In summer, you can swim, rent a SUP, or simply enjoy the calm water reflecting the surrounding mountains.
2. Lake Silvaplana
A favorite spot for water sports: ideal for windsurfing, kitesurfing, or SUP. Thanks to the constant summer winds, it’s a hotspot for adrenaline seekers, with breathtaking mountain panoramas. — Yes, this is my favorite spot in Engadin.
3. Lej da Segl
Known for its purity and peaceful surroundings, ideal for hiking or simply enjoying nature. The lake’s serene beauty offers a refreshing escape from the summer hustle.

4. Lake Sils
Smaller but just as charming as the other alpine lakes. Perfect for canoeing or peaceful walks along the shore. Its quiet atmosphere makes it ideal for meditation, reading, or simply soaking in a moment of alpine tranquility.
5. Stazersee
A small, picturesque lake perfect for short walks, picnics, and enjoying the serenity of nature. In summer, the lakeside is a pleasant spot for families and offers great opportunities for photography or simply exploring the calm surroundings.
Tips for Exploring the Engadin Lakes
Pack a picnic: Many lakes have scenic spots along the shore, perfect for lunch with a view of nature.
Bring swimwear: Summer swims in the lakes are an unforgettable experience.
Capture the scenery: Sunrises and sunsets create magical light for photography.
Combine with hiking: Many lakes are accessible via short trails, making it easy to pair hiking with lakeside relaxation

Immerse yourself in local culture at the Segantini Museum (admission 15 CHF), dedicated to the famous alpine landscape painter, or explore contemporary art galleries scattered throughout the town.
5. Relaxation and wellness
Many luxury hotels and resorts offer mountain-view wellness areas, thermal baths, and spa services. Enjoy a massage, soak in a jacuzzi, or relax in the sauna while surrounded by stunning alpine scenery.

🌄 3-Day Engadin Adventure: Mountains, Lakes, Freedom
🗓 Day 1 – Arrival + Lake SilvaplanaMorning: Arrival in St. Moritz or around Silvaplana. The journey itself, by car or train, is breathtaking.
Afternoon:
Explore the shores of Lake Silvaplana.
Rent kitesurf or SUP equipment, or take a beginner lesson if you haven’t tried kitesurfing yet. More info
Prefer a walk? Enjoy a 6 km easy circuit around the lake.
Evening tip: Dinner in Sils Maria, a cozy alpine village, or choose one of the charming restaurants in Silvaplana.
🗓 Day 2 – Glacier, Mountains, Panorama
Hike idea:
Muottas Muragl – Segantini Hütte – Alp Languard
Take the funicular up to Muottas Muragl.
About 3–4 hours of hiking with breathtaking views.
Stop at Segantini Hut for a picnic or coffee.
Descend to Pontresina and take the bus back.
Alternative:
For glacier lovers: Morteratsch Glacier Trail, an easy and scenic route with historical glacier boundary markers.
Evening: Relax at a thermal spa (e.g., Samedan or Scuol wellness centers).

🗓 Day 3 – Wilderness & Hidden Valleys
Val Fex Valley
Hike starting from Sils Maria into the quiet, green Val Fex, a car-free valley.
A 10 km round-trip, approximately 2.5 hours, but it’s worth taking your time to enjoy the scenery.
Along the way: waterfalls, small meadows, and traditional alpine huts.
Optional stops if you have time:
Stazersee Lake – perfect for a summer swim, nestled in a beautiful forest.
Lej Marsch – a peaceful, more secluded lake with far fewer visitors than the popular routes. Ideal for escaping the crowds and quietly enjoying nature.
🌟 Extra Tips:

Bernina Express: If you have half a day, it’s worth taking a ride on the famous panoramic train from St. Moritz to Tirano. I’ll write more about this in detail later.
Wildlife spotting: In the Swiss National Park, especially around Val Trupchun, you have a good chance of seeing deer or marmots – binoculars are recommended!
Photo spots: Piz Nair viewpoint, Morteratsch Valley, Sunset at Lake Silvaplana.
